I get this question asked here and there so I wanted to address this because of the fact that there are so many other network marketing companies out there that have given a bad reputation to other network marketing companies. There are good and bad direct marketing companies out there just like there are good and bad corporations out there too. Some care about making a difference in the world while others are focused on corporate profits with no regard to the customer. The short answer to the question, is doTERRA a pyramid scheme? is NO, and here is why.
Traditional Corporate Structure – A Pyramid
If you think about a traditional corporate structure, you have a CEO at the top, you have managers under the CEO and then you have other levels of management under them and so on until you get down to the worker level. Essentially a traditional corporate is a pyramid by it’s structure of different levels and branches. doTERRA is also a pyramid in a similar fashion where you have management at the top and then you have managers (wellness advocates) and essential oil users under the managers. Majority of doTERRA customers are essential oil users and they love to be able to purchase oils online with their own wholesale account by having access to 25% off retail pricing. The advantage of having their own mentor, a doTERRA Wellness Advocate is that the Wellness Advocate can guide the essential oil user with proper usage of the essential oils and other products that doTERRA offers. The Wellness Advocate receives ongoing training from doTERRA, and can now go and guide the person using the essential oils. The person is not left alone trying to figure out why and how would they use the oils they have in their hands. The Wellness Advocate can also guide the essential oil user to additional resources that she can utilize to deepen her own knowledge about the essential oils and check information on their own.
If you go to Target and buy a bottle of an essential oil, you can’t call somebody to ask about how to use the oil on yourself or your children unless you happen to know someone trained in essential oils. Also you have no idea of the actual quality of the product since essential oils are not regulated by the FDA. The bottle can state 100% pure essential oil which can mean that the bottle only contains 25% essential oil and the rest is fillers or additives, hence the lower price. The way the essential oils are extracted affects the potency and the quality of the essential oil. If you have used essential oils before and they didn’t do much for you, I recommend you try doTERRA and see and feel the difference yourself. doTERRA is the largest essential oil company in the world with strict quality control. What about the Scheme?
doTERRA is not a scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal. doTERRA doesn’t require you to invest huge amounts of money on hope like some of these scam companies have done in the past, where they sell you on a concept of making millions of dollars if you just buy this one package or put money together in a pool etc. doTERRA sells essential oils and other wellness products to benefit the health of their customers. You are not being tricked to purchase anything you don’t want or need. doTERRA doesn’t require you to purchase a certain level of products before you can have your own wholesale or Wellness Advocate account and get access to wholesale pricing. You are also not required to sell oils or carry an inventory. You are also not required to order anything monthly. There are no ongoing obligations. You get to decide what you want to do and you are not obligated to do anything. Having your own doTERRA account is like having a Costco or Sam’s club type of an account. You can shop whenever you want to and you get to enjoy wholesale prices vs retail. You can check the FAQ for further information. The only “requirement” to join is a $35 account fee that is valid for a year. The optional annual renewals are $25 and include a free bottle of the doTERRA Peppermint essential oil ($27.33 value).
You are getting a real product for an exchange of the money you pay so doTERRA is not a scheme because you are purchasing actual products just like you are when you are shopping at local stores like Target. The only difference is that instead of walking to a store like Target or Mother’s Market, you purchase the essential oils directly from a Wellness Advocate at retail pricing or set-up your own wholesale account while having a Wellness Advocate assigned to you. Your Wellness Advocate will help you with any essential oil or product questions you might have, while also giving you usage tips and other helpful resources.
