What is an Essential Oil?
Essential oils are plant based aromatic compounds that come off plants in oil form. Essential oils are produced four different ways including steam distillation, cold pressing, CO2 extraction and solvent extraction. Steam distillation is the most common method for extracting essential oils. Cold pressing is commonly used with citrus fruits. For the more delicate plants such as flowers like Jasmine solvent extraction is used and the end result is not an oil but an absolute which contains both aromatic and non-aromatic chemical constituents. Essential oils are volatile oils meaning they evaporate in the air. The quality of the essential oil is determined by not only how and where the plant has been grown, if it has been harvested at the peak time and distilled with the correct temperature and time. This is why I personally only recommend using doTERRA‘s essential oils because of their strict quality control and the fact that their essential oils are Pure Therapeutic Grade and go through CPTG Testing .
History Of Essential Oils
Essential oils were first discovered thousands of years ago and were frequently mentioned in the Bible and other literature throughout history. Essential oils were used and referenced by the Egyptians, The Chinese who were really essential oil pioneers, The Greeks and the Europeans. Many modern medicines that are manufactured synthetically now have history of being created from the plants. For example, the idea for aspirin being used today, came from white willow bark, birch and wintergreen, all in their herbal extract form or their essential oil form.
